Yesterday's Lunch [Jul. 1st, 2009|10:51 pm]
[Tags|, ]

For lunch yesterday i had a personal sized pizza of my own construction, the unique ingredients are below described:

crust of personal sized, shrink-wrapped gourmet vegetarian pizza - found in the dumpster. scraped the intermixed toppings & cheese off, not because i am against eating cheese from a dumpster (freegan : i'll eat it if nobody financially supported its production / it is being wasted), but because i'd had one of these exact pizzas the day before as they come, and i didn't really like it--crust was by far the best part.

barbecue sauce - dumpstered in year-plus supply quantities

cayenne pepper - bought cheaply in bulk from co-op farm, supply has lasted me about 3 years, and is just now running out

huy fong foods sriracha hot chili sauce - most delicious & addictive hot sauce i've ever had.

romaine lettuce - dumpstered. pulled apart into a bunch of small pieces & mixed in with the sauces so it wouldn't puff out all over the place.

rosemary - grows in abundance almost everywhere

thyme - dumpstered

purslane, chopped - foraged near home growing out of the sidewalk. lovely little weed full of nutrients.

green beans, chopped - dumpstered

threw the crust in the oven then added the rest of the ingreedz afterwards, starting with the saucies. delicious high quality gourmet meal, almost entirely free save the tiny fractional costs of the portions of cayenne and sriracha that were used.

a mild narrative about my wanderings on the 8th of June [Jun. 9th, 2009|07:26 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

Today I embarked upon a mission of exploration throughout the topography of nearby urbania, accompanied only by my bicycle. This particular mission lasted a total of five and three quarter hours. I brought a small bag of peanuts but no money or tools, as I was confident if I needed anything for some reason, I would find items which would help me. The universe frequently provides me with resources in unexpected ways, consistently enough to almost count on it. Other than thoroughly decorating the streets with my energetic trails and increasing my general knowledge of the local surroundings, this mission provided a few notable elements which I shall describe below.

First was the discovery of a small collection of accidentally discarded items which appear to have formerly been possessed by some sort of middle-aged "bum". These were lying in disarray halfway on and off a sidewalk. There were a few calling cards, a bunched up gaudy thing that used to be a cheap necklace but was now hopelessly entangled, three almost-full lighters, a ticket for drinking in public dated three days ago (indicating the ticketee as a male in his forties), and two giftcards. One was for a store I can't recall but had no interest in, the other for Starbucks-- I took the latter, leaving the other as a potential gift for someone else who might find it. I suspected the cards might have some value still, because the loss of these items did not seem intentional, which I judged by the ticket and the fuel levels of the lighters. I also took the necklace bunch as I'm fond of such things, two of the lighters (the third was covered in grime), and went to the nearest payphone to check the balance of the giftcard. It had $2.75 left, and later in the day I used it to refresh myself with an iced green tea from a company I would never patronize otherwise, guilty as it is for its deplorable role in the homogenization of culture and aggressive approach to stamping out independent competition.

Much to my elation, on my way home I discovered a community of flourishing dandelions in a nice little unused patch of space short-walled off from the sidewalk and adjacent to a rundown looking motel. The green of their leaves was healthy and vibrant and they were in various states of growth, many having already gone to seed, with others soon to convert their yellow flowers into the familiar white spherical puff of pappus-equipped seeds. They were poking out of several cracks in the cement and between the paving and the side of the motel, with a few young ones growing in a weedy square patch of loose dirt. Using a nearby discarded plastic bag from 7-Eleven, I gathered leaves from many different plants, being sure to not take an amount that would cripple any given individual one of them. This is to ensure they remain viable for future gatherings. I uprooted a few of the young ones, as the dandelion's thick taproot is very valuable as well. As payment for my harvest I took several seed wands and blew them around many locations to help the dandelions establish themselves elsewhere--much, I'm sure, to many people's ignorance-induced chagrin. Were they aware of the myriad nutritional and medicinal benefits this plant provides, they would relish its presence.

As I proceeded to work my way back home, I rode through a neighborhood filled with very nice--and expensive--houses. Ambling down the street, I noticed an alley which had a wall almost completely covered in perhaps 50 brightly colored neon posterboard rectangles, each with writing on them. Thinking this must be some sort of school project from a nearby private school, or perhaps someone's fun decorations, I approached the wall to read what it had to say. Interestingly, nearly every single one said almost the exact same thing, but worded in different ways with a unique message every once in a while. All of them were accusatory declamations against the person who apparently lived in the house opposite the alley from the colorful wall of disapproval. The main topic was four alleged cameras (I subsequently spotted three) which were located around the person's heavily fortified property, pointing at the sidewalks and the alley. The author of the posterboards was very upset that people were being filmed against their will and in violation of their rights by the "coward" and "peeping tom" who erected them. The writings emphasized that he is purposefully focusing on children and that one of the cameras is aimed at a playground across the street, implying the man is a pedophilic pervert.

This was a very strange sight in what seemed to otherwise be a calm neighborhood populated by well-off people. I looked at the camera positioning, and while they are indeed filming public territory, they could also simply be security cameras installed by a paranoid and overprotective property owner. However, in order to receive such a virulent public rebuking, I suspect the issue goes much deeper than surface appearances. I rode on and, upon arriving home, made a delicious sandwich with the dandelion leaves I had acquired. Thus conclude the mild tales of another day's experiences, garnered while wandering almost aimlessly, going in whatever direction any fleet whim propels me.

thieving retailers [Apr. 4th, 2009|05:02 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

i used to work at SavOn & then CVS bought them out and i worked for them. as a corporation, SavOn / Albertsons was pretty dumb, but CVS is much worse. they're much more hardlined and essentially anti-consumer, deploying many deceptive tactix designed to swindle people out of their money (note: store level employees are of course nOT responsible, even store managers are not necessarily privy to the idiocy of the corporate workings). throughout my time with them there were multiple occasions when items would be labeled with incorrect prices and sales that wouldn't ring up at the register. the cashier doesn't always know what's going on with every item, naturally, so if the customers don't catch it themselves they get ripped off. sometimes the company would take forever to fix pricing issues. at CVS there was this one super weird "glitch" in the credit card processing terminal that they literally didn't fix for months, and every so often it would randomly add a few dollars to the customer's total!!! if nobody happened to notice, CVS reaped the benefits!

whether it's deception or just plain carelessness, neglect, or inefficiency, pretty much every major retailer is rife with these sorts of problems. the average consumer doesn't pay enough attention, and if they do, they don't care enough to pursue the issue after they've gotten it fixed on their own purchase.

if you are a customer at a major retailer and something scans incorrectly, you can report it to the county, even if you get them to fix it for you while you're there. there should be a sticker on the counter or near the checkout with contact information for reporting inaccuracies. retail giants are far too careless about making sure their sales stay on sale or the tags get changed when prices go up. they should be held accountable every time something goes wrong, because these careless mistakes pay big for them, at the expense of the shopper.

in LA the website where you can file a report is :::

http://acwm.co.la.ca.us/scripts/scanform.cfm

they'll send an inspector out to investigate inaccurate pricing. i don't know what the final results are after you complain, but we should make use of this while it's still there. we're given steps to regulate corporations, and it's best to do what we can to prevent them from evolving further into advanced commercial despots.

TRASH [Mar. 16th, 2009|06:09 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |vernian process]

Putting a monetary value on the packaging of products creates the strong possibility that they will be dealt with as they should be. In California and at least a few other states, people who buy beer, soda, bottled water, juice, etc. have to pay a recycling "deposit" for each bottle or can in addition to any applicable sales taxes. Theoretically, they get the deposit back when they recycle the container. Most people don't recycle so they never get their deposit back, but the fact that there is unclaimed money attached to each container creates the likelihood that littered bottles and cans will still be recycled, most often by scavengers and homeless people.

These types of drink containers in actuality aren't technically "trash", because they are constructed with valuable--and environmentally damaging--materials. They are reclaimable by manufacturers and can be used again for the same or many different purposes. There are lots of different types of packaging that should also have a recycling value placed on them, because it would encourage scavengers to actually more or less clean the city of their own accord, while simultaneously leading those materials to appropriate disposal or reintegration.

For example, today as i was walking home from the library, i picked up several recyclable bottles and cans scattered around the sidewalks and brought them home with me. I saw other recyclable stuff like liquor bottles and food cans, but as there is no financial gain in returning those items, i didn't burden myself with carrying them around. Without getting paid for it, who would?

If there were payments for returning objects that contain materials which can be reused or must be properly disposed of, there would be a lot less trash around. People who buy those objects in the first place, but don't recycle and in fact litter, would be indirectly hiring their own environmental cleanup crew to cover their own shortcomings. I think that's fair. Also the fact that the money put down isn't simply a "tax" and is recoverable by anyone who brings the packaging back in creates a job opening for whoever wants to fill it, whenever they so choose.

One issue in this which i'm not knowledgeable enough about to make much of an argument for is people paying for home recycle bin service. I'm not sure how many cities charge or don't charge for this. Ideally, with a widespread recycling program which many people are aware of and participate in, there could probably be large city or state-run recycle centers where people go to turn back in their recyclable materials instead of little trailers in grocery store parking lots. These centers would be funded by special taxes on all manufacturers who predominantly use recyclable materials in their packaging, thereby creating the need for reclamation. If people are paying deposits on things they buy, but choose to put them in a city recycling bin at their home instead of taking them in, perhaps they shouldn't have to pay for the service since the city or state or whoever gets the deposit in the first place already has the money for the recyclable materials.

WATER [Mar. 15th, 2009|07:17 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |fad gadget]

i am generally pretty concerned with being a conscientious consumer, and to the best of my ability i try to make sure my money isn't going to support people whose actions i completely disagree with. after watching the film FLOW i definitely can't support bottled water, and if you watch it yourself you will completely understand why.

i always thought bottled water was bullshit, but i never knew things were THIS bad. water companies, driven by blind greed, want to completely control an essential resource for life and have absolutely no respect for the way nature works or the people they affect through their destructive actions. what they do is literally causing the death of thousands (millions?) of people and polluting earth's ecological systems causing massive amounts of damage that humanity is going to have to own up to in a very hardcore way pretty soon if they continue unchecked.

anyway, if you care about where your money goes or what is happening with basic elements of life that we take for granted, you should watch this film. netflix it or somethin.

i am eating a blood orange [Mar. 6th, 2009|02:00 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[music |testicular manslaughter]

blood oranges are like regular oranges, except the insides are blood red. it loox really cool encased within the outer peel. yummmmmm

those cellphone ear accessory things are called bluetooths right? where u don't need a cell phone and u can walk around talking and it loox like you're talking to yrself but you aren't. when they first came around, it would take me a bit to figure out they were actually on the phone and not openly crazy. but now that i've become accustomed to them, my first thought is that someone walking around by themselves and talking is actually on the phone. today at the grocery store i thought that, but the person actually WAS talking to himself. i saw him around the store talking, and then he happened to get in line behind me and i realized he was quite nutty, an endless stream of mostly foreign language coming from his mouth in strange, often pissed sounding tones. he also kept compulsively straightening stuff that wasn't his on the conveyor belt. he seemed on the brink of doing something rash if anyone somehow crossed him.

in other news, my gf & i have been keeping a tub of compost under the stairs outside and recently it turned into a cesspool. i checked on it today and found a whole bunch of fluffy mold all over the top dirt layer & climbing up the sides of the bin. a plethora of fruit flies were in there as well and a spider web had developed above the bin to take advantage of the abundant arachnoid food source. i covered everything with dirt and replaced the lid.

next month i'm playing at an art show in downtown LA during the dtLA 2nd thursday monthly art walk where all the galleries are open with foods, alcohol, and art. here's the flyer::::
