2. i started a new blog, originally for my more politically oriented postings, but will probably expand to encompass my ish that is more "sophisticated", i.e. actual article or essay style things that aren't super brief random postings or "updates". assuming i don't abandon it, that is. i probably won't be updating it all that often. but it looks really cool :::

3. myspace seems really dead these days, it's just the trend to be active on facebook now. so i'm using it regularly. hit me up there if you like :::

1925 pounds of meat [Oct. 5th, 2009|05:21 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

that i didn't eat!

October is my anniversary for being vegetarian & vegan....... 7 years veggie, 1 year vegan. I started wholly for ethical reasons, though i've also now seen a vast amount of super well-documented research on why a diet w/out meat & dairy is much healthier in general. if you're interested in that aspect, one tiny starting place is www.cancerproject.org... among other things, they have a free downloadable PDF book that is almost 300 pages long about foods that prevent and fight cancer.

In addition to being more healthy, it's also an economic protest against what i view as a totally corrupt, cruel, and disgusting industry. anyone who understands the law of supply and demand knows that abstaining from meat significantly affects the industry. according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the average American eats roughly 275 pounds of meat per year. say there were only 1000 vegetarians in America... that would mean there needs to be at least 275,000 more pounds of meat on the market!! that in itself, is a lot! well there are WAY more than 1000 vegetarians, and they are making a HUGE impact on the size of the meat industry.

and it helps the environment as well, since the meat industry wastes TONS of water, TONS of food, and pollutes the groundwater and the air in MAJOR amounts! there's tons and tons of documentation about this... for example, a meat-eating diet requires 4,000 gallons of water a day, whereas a vegetarian diet requires only 300 gallons a day. vegan even less. according to the california department of water resources, one single hamburger patty takes 616 gallons of water to produce. that's a lot of water, especially in areas (like california) having serious droughts which don't have much hope of improving until all forms of human production & consumption habits change.

so basically not eating meat is a winning lifestyle choice in pretty much every possible way - health, ethics, environment-- and money too, since meat is more expensive. and don't even bring up the disease-causing blobs they call meat in fast food!! if that's all you eat, i urge you to consider where you'll be in 20 or 30 years... a myriad of studies point to the hospital.

oh yeah, veggies & vegans who pay even the smallest amount of attention to their diet have absolutely NO problem with protein... that's the biggest stereotype there is about this, as if protein is for some reason the most important element in a person's diet, which it totally isn't. people who have no real understanding of nutrition are always quick to ask if veggies are getting enough protein. newsflash! plants have protein!! what they should be asking is, what happens if people get WAY TOO MUCH protein from all the meat they're eating?? cuz that's a far more common problem!!!!

still boycotting nestle... [Sep. 25th, 2009|05:27 pm]
[Tags|, ]

the nestle boycott from ages ago should have never ended--they may have stopped one particular instance of hideous irresponsibility, but they've continued full force with many others.... (water terrorism & major ecological disruption)

back in the day (before my time) there was a worldwide boycott against nestle for having their employees go into super poor south american country villages masquerading as real doctors to convince the poverty-stricken women that they need to buy nestle's baby formula instead of breast-feeding their babies. in addition to that never being more beneficial anyway, nestle's formula was also contaminated and led to tons of baby deaths. despicable!!!

midnight advice [Sep. 22nd, 2009|12:34 am]

if there's ever a legitimately good choice, i highly suggest choosing that one even if it doesn't seem "realistic" compared to the other options (i.e. "throwing your vote away"). the pragmatism of "lesser evils" is self-defeating: the universe rewards authenticity. ^+^

Shit's all about Politrix right now......... [Sep. 11th, 2009|01:05 am]
[Tags|, ]
[music |tim exile]

Anything involving money = political. Unfortunately, whether you think of yourself as a "political" person or not, pay attention to what's going on or not, if you spend money, you participate in politics. So be careful... if you say you believe one thing, but don't care what the people you pay money to all the time believe, you may very well be funding your opposition. And people all around the world are being violently shoved face first into the ground and suffocating as their skulls cave in. If you're middle-class America (and chance is you are, if you're here diddling around), you're shielded pretty well from the consequences of apathy or willful ignorance, and the complete subjugation of millions. Don't feed the machine that just wants to chomp on your brains then spit your guts out to rot in the unforgiving sun.

Non Profit Public Art [Sep. 11th, 2009|12:00 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |johan ess]

I've donated money over the years to several non-profit organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center, Co-op America, and many others. One or many of these organizations share your information with a million other non-profit orgs who then send you their materials, what they're all about, and ask for donations. I have never minded this for the most part, because I like to know what kind of conscientious and helpful action is taking place about this or that issue.

Much of the time unique promotional materials are included, such as greeting cards, dream-catchers, pins, etc. are included. Sometimes they include photographs, with a little story on the back about the person's situation on the front. I've usually kept those, but without much purpose. Tonight I thought of the best use for them. I took a staple gun and went outside and stapled them on the very edge to a tree, so they would stick out and people on either side could see either the photo or the story. I figure they will garner at least a little attention from random passerbys before being ripped down by apathetic kids (since there are multiple schools in the vicinity, there are lots of kids around all the time). Hopefully some people will stop and really look at them and read what it's about and devote a little time into researching and possibly helping.

The ones I put up tonight were from FINCA, who I've also donated to previously.

I am all about using the privilege I have been gifted with for aiding those in worse circumstances than me... while things may often seem bad for us middle-class types, it's still total luxury to a massive amount of people around the world.

messages from restroom walls... [Sep. 10th, 2009|07:03 pm]
[Tags|]
[music |Höyryjuna]

The scrawlings found in public restrooms are a strange exercise in collaborative folk art. While often mundane and inane, they are interesting in how they work. Written conversations develop via individuals who add a single part, frequently pointing an arrow to what they were responding to, and then never see who else adds to it after they are gone.

There's a photography book which captures stuff like this, which unfortunately i don't have. I'm even friends with them on myspace but i can't remember what it's called and can't find it in the labyrinth of friends. Damn.... i was going to link to them.

do you bank with CHASE? [Sep. 10th, 2009|01:50 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

if you do, i recommend you get out now! they are one of the most vicious banks / credit companies out there, and will do anything to hit their customers with unexpected fees. all i'm sayin is, if you plan on keeping your money with them you definitely want to be careful or plan on throwin down for random fees every once in a while. sure they might hire friendly people to work behind the glass, but their policy is stiff and unfriendly.

i highly suggest you bank with a local Credit Union, as they are much more customer-friendly when it comes down to it. large, famous banks more or less seem to just view their average, non-super-rich customers as bitches to be slapped around!!!

Military Marketing [Aug. 27th, 2009|05:26 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Military recruitment advertising always plays on how you can be a leader, when everybody knows one of the main things they want from you is to follow rules from your superiors without any thought or questioning. You can NEVER be a real leader in the military, because unless you're the President of the United States, you still have to take orders from whoever is above you. Hence the message I scrawled on a Marine postcard I found in a magazine :

No postage necessary in the US, so off to the mail with that!

In case anyone takes offense at this, I want to point out I'm not inherently against individuals choosing to join the military, nor do I think you can't learn any extremely valuable skills while there. The only thing I am commenting on is the fact that they always make it out like you're going to fully realize yourself, be in control, be a leader, etc. and overall that is obviously not the main thing going on in such organizations.

mayonnaise [Aug. 27th, 2009|12:57 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |big fun - teenage suicide]

vegan mayonnaise is far superior to regular mayonnaise. even before i
was veggie or vegan i was disgusted by mayonnaise... i would still use
a thin layer of it to moisten bread on a sandwich, but if i licked a
bit off the knife afterwards it would literally make me gag. vegan
mayonnaise, however, is amazing! it can pretty much be slathered on
anything and will only increase the deliciousness!

google = big brother?? [Jul. 23rd, 2009|11:18 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[music |edward sharpe & the magnetic zeros]

well they could be......

you may not know this, but if you regularly search things using Google and never clear your browser's cookies, they know EVERYTHING you've ever searched! and if you've ever searched for your own name or address, or any other personally identifiable things just for fun, then they know exactly who has been searching for all these things.

i personally don't use google for regular searches.... i use SCROOGLE, which just returns google's results *without* storing the information.

scroogle has a whole thing against google... some of it is a little bit wacky, but all in all it is far-sighted and justified and if you feel like questioning the power of "googling" things instead of just searching for them, then visit www.google-watch.org

(also i was informed of www.blackboxsearch.com which loox like a good one)

++++++++++++

NOW the big deal is that Google is working up towards unleashing their massive digital library, but they have NO privacy protections.... which means that they very likely will track everything you read. that is a problem for a variety of reasons, unfriendly & Big Brother-esque government activity not the least of them.

you can read the following article for a thorough description of the issue if you are concerned ::

http://www.eff.org/issues/privacy/google-book-search-settlement

++++++++++++++

just tryin to look out for y'all ;)

//////////////// & speaking of big bro!!

AMAZON.com recently engaged in some weird behavior that unwittingly displayed the power they possess to control and censor information... they deleted the book "1984" by George Orwell (and a few others) from everybody who had purchased it on their digital book reader--with no warning!!

overview by natural news is here for those interested :::::

http://www.naturalnews.com/026675_DRM_Big_Brother_Amazoncom.html

article by ny times :::

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/technology/companies/18amazon.html

also highly recommend reading "1984" if you haven't or haven't in a while.
